How to file a 1099-DIV online: where TurboTax, H&R Block, TaxAct, FreeTaxUSA and Cash App Taxes ask for it
In tax software, a 1099-DIV is entered on a screen of its own, by typing its boxes or by importing them from the brokerage, and the program carries them to the return. This page shows where each of five programs asks for it, in their own words as read on November 5, 2026:
- TurboTax, TaxAct and FreeTaxUSA name the screen on their help pages.
- H&R Block lists the 1099-DIV among the forms it can import; we did not find a page naming the screen. Cash App Taxes says it takes 1099s and investments, without naming the screen.
- FreeTaxUSA already shows “Start 2026 return”. TurboTax's online page still describes offers for tax year 2025.
The five programs at a glance
| Program | Where the 1099-DIV goes | Free version | 2026 returns |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash App Taxes | Not named on its help pages | Free, federal and state | No date on its page |
| FreeTaxUSA | Income > Common Income > Investments and Savings | Federal free; state $15.99 | “Start 2026 return” |
| H&R Block | Not named on its help pages; import is offered | Free Online up to $1,500 | No date on its pages |
| TaxAct | Income > Investments & Savings > Dividends | Free version takes no dividends | No date on its pages |
| TurboTax | Wages & Income > investment income > 1099-DIV | Free Edition up to $1,500 | Offers for tax year 2025 |
Before you type it in
- One form at a time. TurboTax asks for each 1099-DIV separately, even two from the same payer.
- No form? TurboTax's help page: “You still need to report your dividend income, no matter the amount.”
- Treasury funds. Part of the dividends from funds such as SGOV, SPAXX or VUSXX may be free of state tax, and you enter that part yourself: U.S. government interest in tax software.
- The $1,500 line. Free versions that leave out Schedule B stop at $1,500 of interest and dividends: free tax filing with dividends, and three programs side by side on FreeTaxUSA vs TaxAct vs TurboTax.
- A child's Trump account. The $1,000 election can go with the return: Form 4547 and tax software.

How we checked
- Each company's help, product and price pages, read November 5, 2026 (H&R Block's import page in a browser), plus the free-version pages we read on October 31, 2026 for our other tax pages.
- We did not prepare returns in the programs. Screens can change between tax years.
What this page does not cover
- Which program to use. We report what each one publishes, in alphabetical order.
- Selling shares (Form 1099-B), foreign tax paid and other boxes of the 1099-DIV beyond where the form goes.
Rechecks and changes
We will read the pages again in January, when the programs post their screens and prices for 2026 returns.
